Yes, You Need a Mentor
We all love those epic tales of the “self-made” man or woman. The idea of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and conquering the world single-handedly is intoxicating. Why? Because our flesh wants us to believe we don’t need anyone or anything to succeed. We just need to work harder, try harder and push through.
Exhausting, Right? And Definitely NOT the Gospel.
As Christians who are artists or creative professionals, we know better. The very resources we use, the air we breathe, the bodies we inhabit, reveal our dependency on the Lord. Psalm 24:1 says:
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;”
It’s frustrating we don’t know and celebrate our dependency on Christ because that is where the real freedom is. Now don’t hear me saying we lay around and God serves up our lives on a silver platter; we know it doesn’t work that way. God wants our participation, not our proclivity to “bootstrap it alone”. We need God AND we need each other. So here’s the raw truth: no matter how talented, passionate, or connected you are, you need a mentor. Yes, you. And let me tell you why.
Time and again, successful people will tell you they wouldn’t be where they are today without the guidance of mentors. In our early years, these helpers come in the form of teachers, parents, or coaches. But as we mature, that journey becomes more intentional. We have to actively seek out the mentors who will help us navigate the complex landscape of our creative careers. Mentors are the key.
There’s a reason why “84% of Fortune 500 companies and 100% of Fortune 50 companies have mentoring programs”, according to Forbes Magazine. The greatest companies on earth know the value of mentorship, and they invest in it heavily. It’s not just a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have.
Denzel Washington hit the nail on the head when he said:
“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living—if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.”
— Denzel Washington
And it’s not just Hollywood icons who get it. Even the wise Solomon knew the necessity of mentorship. Here’s what he said thousands of years ago:
“Without counsel, plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed.”
— Solomon, Proverbs 15:22 (ESV)
The message is clear: you can’t do it alone. You need a guiding hand to show you the ropes, to help you see the forest for the trees, and to push you beyond what you thought was possible.
The Benefits of Having a Mentor
Alright, now let’s talk benefits. The research is crystal clear: having a mentor offers tremendous advantages. These can come from their experience, wisdom, or the connections they have. Maybe it’s as simple as having someone to bounce your ideas and goals off of. But whatever it is, the results speak for themselves.
Here are some of the game-changing benefits you can expect from having a mentor:
1. Better Mental Health: Navigating your path with guidance reduces stress and anxiety.
2. Increased Self-Confidence: You walk taller when an expert is in your corner.
3. Increased Motivation: Accountability propels you forward.
4. Expanded Network: Mentors open doors to new opportunities.
5. Greater Career Satisfaction: Clarity leads to fulfillment in your work.
6. More Defined Goals: Achieve success with clear, actionable objectives.
7. Accelerated Progress: Hit your targets faster than you ever thought possible.
But here’s the kicker: having a mentor doesn’t just add value—it multiplies it. The right mentor accelerates your progress like rocket fuel. They’ve been where you want to go, and they know the shortcuts to get you there.
The Challenges of Finding the Right Mentor
Now, let’s get real: finding the right mentor is not easy. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. You’re looking for someone who not only possesses the expertise and experience you need but also aligns with your Christian values, goals, and learning style.
For Christians working in arts, media, or entertainment, the challenge can be even greater. You need a mentor who genuinely understands the unique challenges creatives face, but who can also guide your spiritual journey. It’s a delicate balance, and without it, you risk frustration, wasted time, and missed opportunities.
Imagine having a spiritual mentor who doesn’t quite grasp the intricacies of a creative career. Or perhaps a creative career mentor who doesn’t understand your spiritual convictions. Both scenarios can lead to roadblocks in your journey. You need someone who understands both worlds intimately—a mentor who gets your creative hustle and your spiritual walk.
Resources for Christians
As Christians, we have an edge—a treasure trove of resources at our disposal. First and foremost, we have the Bible, God’s living Word. It’s our ultimate guide for wisdom and insight. Then there’s the Holy Spirit, our comforter and counselor, offering discernment and direction in those tricky moments.
But let’s not forget the powerhouse resource that is the community of believers—both the local church and a ministry like ours here at AEM of like minded artists and creatives.
The Christian life isn’t meant to be lived in isolation. We are designed to live in community, to share burdens, and to support each other. That’s why one of the first questions we ask newcomers to L.A. is, “How are you connecting with a local church?” And no, this doesn’t mean just watching a service online. I’m talking about being part of a vibrant community where you can be known and know others. It’s essential for growth and accountability.
