Thank you for the broadcast. In my notes I recorded all 55 mindset problems, and several applied to me. You have convicted me that my largest problem is “calloused Christianity. I would say that my decades-long allegiance to Christ has left me with a thick callous that resists basic truths.

The longer I listened to Michelle, the greater the conviction became that my problem was over-familiarity with the solution. I thought I knew all that, but I realized that my familiarity had become a barrier to the solution.

I am going away to the beach here in SC to repent and restart with a new heart.

I live on the east coast so I am just finishing listening to the forum from last night.
About 30 years ago I was an art major at a secular college exploring whether it was OK to be a Christian and an artist. Every time I tried to discard my skill God would bring some need where my skill was needed.
My history with my church and art has also grown. I was the one who they called on when they needed a mural in the kids rooms. I wrote to you about my difficulty when a committee decided that they all needed to be painted over. Long story. Your response and alot of counseling was helpful.
So I’m still at the same church though I’m still very guarded to use my skills ever in the same way. This means I get to experience the sadness when others are chosen for other murals.

Aside from that I thought I would share how the pastor has been challenging the art group. He is actually from California and has been preaching here for 3 years.
He is specifically asking us artists in the church for art during Advent and Easter. Two years ago it was what did Angels actually look like. If you read the scripture they were not cute cherubs! Also how did Jesus treat women or the women in Jesus genealogy. So Tamar, Ruth, Bathsheba and Rahab. All very challenging passages of scripture.
We are doing a sketchbook project with Proverbs right now trying to engage people who might not consider themselves to be artists.

I think he is trying to get us to recapture that wonder of God.

Art can be a way to help grapple with very difficult parts of scripture. It’s been good.

Right now I am just trying to combine my art that I do, art that I present to the rest of the world and how to not feel like I have a split personality. I can’t exactly show an angel with 4 faces at the local coffee shop.

I also work at a Hobby Lobby which is about as kitchy as it gets.

I am really thankful for a few other artists at the church our relationship as believers is more important than the art. God is still working I’m praying he will keep me around long enough to see some good things happen.

      Good to hear.
Hobby Lobby may not be high art, but at least they care about making homes beautiful, and they are Christian run.

I encourage you to watch our YouTube podcast on Christianity and Creativity.

      Blessings

Also I really think what is in our hearts will show up in whatever kind of art we do. Unless it is purely commercial maybe. The things that we can’t quite put words to show up in what we create.

      Agreed
Jesus said that our speech is an overflow of the heart.
We would say art is simply a form of communication or speech.

I have resonated with this discussion. My connection to painting started when I was very young. Probably a way to communicate when I was a quiet child. I had to really search out scripture when I was in a secular college whether it was OK to be an artist and a Christian.
When I returned from college my church would ask me to do things. I actually wrote in when the church committee decided to paint over the murals I had painted. The people who clean the church were the ones who stopped them from painted them all over. So only one was lost. It’s too long of a story to share. Your response and some professional counseling helped.

When I was in Covid lockdown I hiked and I painted almost everyday for 2 months. The church leadership also changed. Again too long of a story.

Our pastor now is challenging us artists to have art for Advent and Easter. Themes of things like what might angels actually look like? Not those cute hallmark cherubs. Also the women in Jesus Genealogy- Rahab, Tamar, Ruth, Bathsheba very messy stories.

We just display them in the foyer. We are doing a sketchbook project now with the Proverbs. We have just spent an entire year with that book as a church.

The work on my website is not angels with 4 faces. Feel like I have a split personality sometimes. Art I can hang in Ithaca or art for church. Anyhow God is still working. I’m glad I didn’t completely walk away from the church, though mentally I’m still guarded.

We share some of your posts among the small group.

Also I really think what is in our hearts will show up in whatever kind of art we do. Unless it is purely commercial maybe. The things that we can’t quite put words to show up in what we create.

      Katherine,

Thank you so much for sharing this.
It is wonderful to hear things are getting better. Let us know if we can help in a anyway and if there are any topics we could address to encourage and assist you and your church.

For many years I was crippled by pain and bed ridden after a car accident. I am now getting proper medical care and I believe I am on the cusp of being able to work from bed doing my cartooning. It is this hope that has sustained me when I am afraid or uncertain, and I am deeply thankful God has given me such a gift. In preparation of being able to draw again I have written a children’s book and half way through writing a five issue comic series. This world can be heartbreaking, I hope I can tell stories that let kids (and the kid inside all of us) laugh and escape into a world that helps put this one into perspective. Thank you both for your message and resources, they are always inspiring to me.
